Hydroseeding vs. Sod

Sod provides an instant green lawn, but that convenience comes with a higher upfront cost and some installation limitations. Hydroseeding is applied as a mixture of grass seed, mulch, fertilizer and other amendments designed to help create favourable conditions for germination. Prep & After Care

Preparing Your Property for Hydroseeding

Proper preparation is one of the most important factors in establishing a healthy, long-lasting lawn. Before we arrive, please make sure:

  • Remove existing vegetation, weeds, brush, rocks and debris from the area to be hydroseeded.
  • Complete grading and drainage work before hydroseeding. The finished soil surface should have the desired slope and drainage.
  • Provide a good layer of quality topsoil where required. Poor, compacted or rocky soil can make lawn establishment more difficult.
  • Ensure the soil is loose and properly prepared. Compacted soil should be loosened before application to give new grass roots room to develop.
  • Complete irrigation installation before hydroseeding if you are installing an underground irrigation system.
  • Keep vehicles, equipment and foot traffic off the prepared area as much as possible before and after application.
  • Let us know about sprinklers, underground utilities, drainage systems, septic areas or other features that may affect the application.

The better the soil preparation, the better the conditions for your new lawn to establish.

After Your Hydroseed Application

Your new lawn needs consistent care during the establishment period. Water, patience and limited traffic are the keys to success.

Watering

Watering is the most important part of aftercare.

  • Begin watering as directed after your hydroseed application.
  • Keep the hydroseed mulch and soil surface consistently moist, but not saturated.
  • During warm, dry or windy weather, more frequent watering may be required.
  • Avoid heavy watering that creates puddles, runoff or erosion.
  • As the grass begins to grow and develop roots, gradually reduce watering frequency while increasing the depth of watering.

Do not allow the newly hydroseeded area to dry out completely during germination. Weather conditions can change quickly, so your watering schedule may need to be adjusted accordingly.

Stay Off the New Lawn

Keep foot traffic, pets, vehicles and equipment off the newly hydroseeded area as much as possible.

The soil and developing grass are vulnerable during the early stages of establishment. Walking or driving over the area can disturb the seed, compact the soil and create bare spots.

First Mowing

Once the grass has established and reached an appropriate mowing height, it can be mowed.

  • Use a sharp mower blade.
  • Avoid cutting more than approximately one-third of the grass height at a time.
  • Mow when the soil is firm enough that the mower will not create ruts.
  • Avoid aggressive turning or repeated passes over newly established turf.

Your first few mowings should be gentle while the root system continues to develop.

Fertilizing

Your hydroseed application may already include starter fertilizer. Avoid adding additional fertilizer too soon unless recommended. Once the lawn is established, a regular fertilization program can help maintain healthy growth. Soil conditions, grass type and the time of year will determine the appropriate fertilizer and application schedule.

Weeds

It is normal to see some weeds during the establishment of a new lawn. Weed seeds can already be present in the soil or introduced by wind, birds or other sources.

Do not apply weed killer or other lawn chemicals to newly germinating grass unless specifically advised. Young grass can be sensitive to herbicides, and premature applications may damage the developing lawn.
